WHAT IS HORNING SAILING CLUB’S RYA TRAINING CENTRE?
It is a place where:
Our RYA Training Centre is non-profit making and run entirely by a large band of volunteers. All our Instructors are unpaid volunteers who give up their time and make a huge commitment to the Club and the children.
It is a sailing school with a wide age range of 8+ to adult including children with special needs. We are inclusive of everyone.
We make sure our training is very affordable and accessible to all – Learning to sail here is not expensive, and we are not a closed shop with just a few select sailors - Everyone can use our great facilities – it’s not just for us, but for everyone
It’s a place where you have fun and make lots of friends, where young and old people meet and learn to sail.
Young people can experience the freedom of sailing their own boat in a safe environment
WHY DO WE WANT A FLOATING CLASSROOM?
Somewhere to go if you have an accident - it is a warm, safe place if you hurt yourself.
It is 20 minutes from our Clubhouse to the Broad
Somewhere to change when we capsize and get cold, we can get warm and dry instead of waiting until we get back to the Clubhouse.
We can have teaching there without having to go back to the Clubhouse.
Parents: somewhere we can watch the kids sailing, can take handicapped people too.
Can go to other events at different clubs.
We can stay out longer and teach day-long courses for both children and adults.
A floating classroom at the sailing club offers more opportunities for people who would not sail otherwise - It gives a wider range of people the chance to come along and watch or join in.
HOW WILL YOU GET PEOPLE TO VOTE FOR US?
Everyone can use our great facilities – it’s not just for us, but for everyone.
More people can have the chance to have fun and learn to sail – if they don’t like sailing, they can come and watch.
Sailing gets more people out of their houses and on to the water It’s a healthy, active lifestyle and keeps youngsters off the streets
People can learn more about the Broads
WHAT ARE OUR PRESENT PROBLEMS?
We need more first aid facilities on the Broad, from a safety point of view
When you capsize you have to go into the toilet on the pontoon, which is very cold
If you capsize and get too cold, it takes 20 minutes to get back to the Clubhouse, then you miss the rest of the racing
HOW WOULD THIS PROJECT BENEFIT THE LOCAL COMMUNITY?
There is a lot in the Press about bad teenagers – this project would get teenagers off the streets and on to the water where they could learn to sail in a safe environment.
Sailing is an eco-friendly sport in itself and it is a healthy, active lifestyle for everyone – you can just get out there and do it! It’s so much fun!
Sailing gives young people a taste of freedom and independence that they can’t often experience nowadays – this is especially true for when they have control of their own boat – they really enjoy themselves.
It is very affordable for all age ranges and backgrounds and we take children with special needs too.
We are a self-help Club run entirely by volunteers who love sailing and we want to share this with as many people as possible from the wider community who would not otherwise have the chance to try sailing.
HOW WOULD THIS PROJECT TRANSFORM THE LOCAL ENVIRONMENT?
It would make it better, as sailing is a green activity – we teach respect for the Broads and its wildlife, and the importance of preserving it for future generations to enjoy and we don’t throw litter on the water!
We are a successful sailing nation. We aim to give our young sailors the training, confidence and ambition to have every chance of getting to the Olympics!!
Gaining confidence from achieving success on the water helps with other aspects of life and children achieve more at school etc.
