Roy Kemp lists only one staithe at Wroxham. His reference is B10, map reference OS 134 295172 (same on OL40). This puts the staithe well upstream of the bridge, nowhere near the Rhond. Described as Parish/Public - I expect you all know where it is, except me (I never go there).

RK lists 56 staithes. I have an update listing 63. Still no Wroxham Rhond one, nor Brundall either.

The compiler of the updated list told me recently that his list is now over 100.

The Rhond and BarnesBrinks are in Hoveton, not Wroxham. It may be worth looking there, Peter.

The staithe at OS 134/295172 is Caen Meadow, also known as Wroxham Village - perhaps because it was formerly known as Wroxham Village Staithe? The land on which the staithe stands, together with the adjacent meadow and woodland, is let at a peppercorn pound to Wroxham Parish by the Trafford Estate. Wroxham PC do a magnificent job of maintaining it for all to enjoy and access is wide open by land or water.

This can't be the only example of admirable maintenance of an ancient Broads facility due to the non-involvement of the BA?

Thanks, GF.
Far be it from me to diss OF, but I knew that (believe it or not!) and I checked beforehand but there are no staithes listed for Hoveton in either Roy's or the update. Wroxham was the nearest to the point at issue.

Roy Kemp's work is incomplete and whilst its a good start it shouldn't be taken as a definitive list. Roy didn't do any work on Hoveton, Brundall or Great Yarmouth (I'd be amazed if YYS beside the NW Tower wasn't a public staithe - it was freely used by waiting wherries for centuries). The public staithe he mentions at Wroxham is a small one near Caen Meadow - under Wroxham church.

I'd also be fairly confident that there's a public staithe beside the Swan in Horning, the site of some old Maltings and currently occupied by Southern Comfort.

Lots more work to be done. Unfortunately, its very time consuming.

Peter

Is there one at Salhouse?

Yes. The dyke leading towards the village from Salhouse broad. Another reason why Salhouse Broad can't be closed.

Richard,

RK places it at 320150.

I suspect that many of the locations that are thought to have existed but are not on RK's list (up to 50 of them) are of uncertain or disputed provenance.

A lot of work indeed, and uphill all the way.

Thanks Peter

That GR is right up at the top end of the Dyke just where the footpath turns left out of the car park.

Well and truly overgrown.

Now Henry Cator charges £12 per night for the moorings on the Broad. That was hidden before because he got his money from the Broads Authority as rent.

We seemed to have moved on from Barnes Brinkcraft a bit but it just shows that when you lift the lid, it is a can of worms.

Adam, I suggest you list your grievances with the yard and put it to them in writing as a formal complaint. Include what it would take for them to put things right. I suggest a refund of the fuel money, your deposit and a small payment for your disturbed holiday at very least. If they don't help write again explaining that you have no alternative but to sue them in the county court and then do just that - online at
https://www.moneyclaim.gov.uk/csmco2/index.jsp
- it's easy, cheap and very low risk. £1200 for a 4 day break should have been a top of the range holiday, not the lash up that you experienced.

In fairness to BB do post the result, obviously we only have one side of the story. Good luck.

Why am I not suprised, after several decades on the river this yard and stories like yours are not unusual.

What a pleasure it is to hear from the River Commissioners again. Low cost, local organisation with only around fourteen staff? Maintained the rivers most effectively but were criticised for paying insufficient attention to conservation - which wasn't within their remit. Could have been fixed more effectively and considerably more cheaply than the current burgeoning and unaccountable bureacracy. Did I hear 180 BA staff now?

Don't worry - we'll have that parish staithe registered.

Love & kisses OF.
