Dusty,

Tried to pm you direct but failed. Call me if you wish (I'm in the Norwich & North Norfolk 'phone book ... but slightly reluctant to post my number).

I have a photo of Gladys in a GYOD race at Horning in the early 1930s. I'll have to take advice on how to post it! She seems to have been passed amongst several of the Medcalf family but just seems to have disappeared after the war. I have checked and there is no recollection of her being in the Southgate fire.

Be good if you are able to help get closer to the old boats fate. There may even be a project lurking somewhere!

Just as an observation on other comments - there are a number of Walter Woods boats still sailing about the Broads. Pirate, Corsair and Buccaneer are three obvious examples. Forester is a Walter Woods design but built away. There's another one in the Eastwood Whelpton hirefleet but I really can't remember her name just at the moment. Unlike his brother's work, Old Walter's designs seem to be recognisable by flat sheerlines!

Would that be Bootlegger?

Would that be Bootlegger?[/quote]

Yes it would be, and I think she one of the best looking yachts in hire on the Broads.

If you can contact the family on behalf of this forum and ask if any have any recollections of the boat and what might have happened to Gladys - that might be the best way forward.

It's known that the Medcalf family still owned the boat up to the 2nd World War but after the war nothing is known of her (see earlier thread as well). It's a long time ago though so its possible we will never know?

Hope you can help
LG

Thanks ever so much for the pic of the Gladys "look-a-like" that you posted LG.

Unfortunately I only have the descentants names and addresses as recent as 1991 and don't have access to UK phone books or electoral rolls so I'm sorry but I don't think I will be much use to you afterall - unless I can pass these details to someone in UK privately.

Good luck with your hunt

Hi Jamie,

Oh you little treasure

I'd love to ring you but sadly I'm on the other side of the world. (and I agree about not posting your phone # on here)

I also looked for a PM system on here also but couldn't find it - does anyone know if PM's are available/allowed?

Not only would I love to help with finding Gladys but I'd also like to find this family as they are part of my family history research (yes! we are related but they haven't received the good news YET!!)

I'll be off line for two weeks but in the meantime (and if PM's aren't available) I shall try and set up a new Hotmail account that may be of assistance.

This forum doesn't do PMs. But, given the intriguing nature of your mutual quest, you are both welcome to make use of

contact@broads-nav.com

for the passing of sensitive contact info. We already know where to find Mr Campbell. Sometimes.

You'll find that our confidentiality practices are more watertight than some of those old boats.

Thank you for allowing us to use your email address.

I have sent a (long) message giving the family details as I know them so far.

Fingers crossed that this will help in your search for Gladys

Have just received this impoverished plea for help:

Peter,

As the regions technological cretin, I wonder if you'd be kind enough to post this photo on the Great Yarmouth OD thread on Speaker's Corner. It shows the missing GYOD (H6) Gladys racing at Horning in the 'Halfdecker' menagerie class that was formed around 1936; it seems largely to provide the Yarmouths with a bit more racing. It's probably another Aldous shot.

H2 is Pimpernel, considered in her day to have been the fastest Yarmouth. She was built for H.A.Vallings of of Heath Bank,Bickley,Kent and seems to have been first registered in 1914. I think that this is the Yarmouth that Willy May is currently rebuilding for Dick Mace. That'll be two Yarmouths properly refettled - which puts the Museum of the Broads' steady destruction of White Damsel properly and precisely in perspective.

Thanks indeed Dusty, safely received and forwarded to Jamie Campbell.

If researchers seeking Gladys would care to send their Email address to contact@broads-nav.com we'll share Dusty's information.

For everyone else following with interest; sorry but it's probably better that Dusty's notes are not reproduced on open forum. Please accept that they could prove to be very useful to researchers and with patience we may all benefit from learning the full story one day.

Our good wishes go to those engaged in the quest for Gladys.

Great pic of Gladys - thank you to the owner of the photo

I hope you wont mind if I "borrow" a copy of it - please

If H2 was first registered in 1914, is it possible that Gladys (H6) was first registered in 1919 by EFM?

Dusty

Thanks Broads-Nav for the courier service

Hi Dusty, have tried tarting up Jamie's picture but the information is just not there to pull up, sorry.

If I assume these are all Yarmouths - are two varnished?
Does this give a clue to which ones these were?
Wonderful photo!
