Been on holiday
Read an interesting book

State of Fear by Michael Crichton

You probably all know about it but the statistics on which it is based are real I checked a sample!

Thanks Richard and Grunty for keeping the flag flying. It is time to take things onto the offensive, and perhaps even be offensive! Check this out, "I am very serious about this issue. I think stamping out the global warming scam is vital to saving our wonderful way of life."

This was said by John Coleman. Who he? He is a meteorologist who founded The Weather Channel. He sold out and then watching from an airport one day saw that his creation had been taken over by tree-hugging, bed-wetting, affluence-denying, apologist lefties spouting Al Gore's global warmonger nonsense. He's "mad as hell" and is "not going to take it any more".

Read his entire article here:

I ask you, ladies and gentlemen...and gruntfuttock...who is the more offensive? Someone who denies global warming by studying the evidence and concluding it's tosh, or someone who hates the society we live in and wants to take your freedom away, but won't tell you directly?

Climate change is happening, you can't deny it. Actually, it's been happening for about 4bn years, so far as we can tell!

We need to define terms. In my book, what we should accept is that climate change happens: it may be warming (probably was, for a while, until 10 years ago) or it may be cooling. OTOH, there's the scam - Global Warming is definitely happening and it's all the fault of man. Bunk.

Gentleman or not, I fail to understand how anyone could expect the climate to be constant. No matter how (or if) you choose to believe this universe came about, surely you don't think that all the planets and moons behave in perfectly symmetrical orbits around that big yellow ball in the sky, following precisely the same track time after time?

I have never studied astronomy, but don't believe there is orbit tracking evidence which shows perfectly repeated orbits and therefore a constant distance between sun and earth at the same point annually in the solar calendar. Given that just a tiny differential - just a few hundred miles - on the earth's surface produces a very different measurement of the sun's radiation, then a miniscule variation in orbit will produce significant climate change. It ain't rocket science, now is it?

What goes around comes around and a bias in one direction will become an equal bias in the opposite direction eventually. We wobble, ever so slowly, like a giant spinning top given a nudge. If you subscribe to the Big Bang theory, then a fragment of the energy which moved this planet away from the 'bang' must remain and must influence our orbit to some degree.

That doesn't suit everyone because it contributes nothing to the desire to control the oil producing nations, by force if necessary. Nor to the lobby which is hell-bent on using the powers of taxation and panic to reduce our dependency on that oil, because dependency on any external nation or economic community renders us prone to domination. Much of our economic and logistical framework is dependent on oil products and you can't just stop using it without some kind of replacement, unless you want to shut the whole place down.

My own belief is that what is many times more dangerous than our carbon boot prints is the current fashion for government at a variety of levels to prefer deceit as a means to control the masses.

Here in Peasemoldia, we don't do lies.

Well, call me a cynical old marsupial, but as a rule of paw, I generally find that when you have two, big, complex and conflicting arguments going the rounds, the simplest way to the truth, is to study the proponents and their antecedents.

In this case, the principal deniers and debunkers of the so-called Global Warming threat, are George Bush, the Bush administration, the Republic Party in the United states, the Global petro-chemical industry, and a chain of hired, funded and salaried experts, which the aforementioned industry has proven to be bankrolling.

So we'll believe them shall we - why not?

I'd also really like to know how if mankind's activities on Earth have been nothing but benign, a huge hole in the Ozone Layer appeared over the South Eastern Pacific seven years ago, and has been giving my cousins (and yours) cancer, ever since.

But heck - what would I know?
I'm just a small bear with a small brain.

OK, you're a cynical old marsupial (!) but do consider that President Bush has endorsed recent climate change initiatives (more fool him), and that on the other side of this debate are:
- a man who spends $24,000 per year on electricity on only one of his four houses and exhorts others to travel less while he nips about in his private jet. This is the same man who set up a corporation to provide carbon offsets sold by airlines with himself as the chief shareholder. And it's also the same man whose Nobel-prize winning film was proved in a British court to have major flaws.
- several thousand so-called scientists whose livelihoods now depend upon the continuation of this scam. These are people who continue to write reports confirming each others' findings in the face of evidence to the contrary and who want to silence the opposition by claiming that the debate is over. It ain't.
- assorted old-line lefties who lost the arguments over communism and now want to find another excuse to take control over other people's lives.
- lots of people who like to go to conferences in such hardship locations as Bali, Rio and Kyoto

What really should be counting here is the uncovering of real truth through the power of observation, the logic of arguments and the continual testing of theories between people who value open debate and value diverse perspectives. That is how real progress is made.

When I am "faced with two, big, complex and conflicting arguments going the rounds, the simplest way to the truth, is to" find out which side is trying to silence the other, and then side with their opponents. I think history is on my side on that one!

Mr Marsupial, it was funny we should have discussed this only two days ago, because just today, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research (TCPR) issued a press release about this VERY topic, and jolly interesting it is too. I've reproduced most of it below. And remember this is only one of four homes the man has. Before you read it, you might want to get out your own most recent electricity bill and see how many KwH you consume.

When it comes to climate change, I think we should just ignore him, don't you?

Energy Guzzled by Al Gore’s Home in Past Year Could Power 232 U.S. Homes for a Month
Gore’s personal electricity consumption up 10%, despite “energy-efficient” home renovations

NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the TCPR.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the TCPR. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, An Inconvenient Truth, a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the TCPR uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the TCPR exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria.

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The TCPR, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service..

So it's irrelevant that Algore uses up a quarter of a megawatt per year on one house alone? If that energy comes from chicken poo or some other "green source", that makes it alright, then. I see.

Your original thesis was that because there are bad people from your perspective lined up on one side of the debate the goodies from your perspective must therefore be correct.

Mine was that it's observation and logical argument that will ultimately win the day. I'm comfortable in my shoes, thanks.

I don't recall having anything as grand as a thesis.

Being in the information business for more than half my life, I'm painfully aware that claims and counter claims at this level are generally more politics than profundity.

As for dirty tricks (on either side)? They're easy enough to spot, but like Athlete's Foot, very hard to eradicate.

One of the reasons why 'being comfortable in your shoes', is a luxury one might envy you?

Amazing striped icebergs

Icebergs in the Antarctic area sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions.

Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with meltwater and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls into the sea, a layer of salty seawater can freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a
green stripe.

Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the sea.

Antarctica Frozen Wave Pixs - Nature is amazing!

The water froze the instant the wave broke through the ice. That's what it is like in Antarctica where it is the
coldest weather in decades
. Water freezes the instant it comes in contact with the air. The temperature of the
water is already some degrees below freezing.

Just look at how the wave froze in mid-air!!!

Wow! Stunning pictures CP. Just needs to have a boardwalk built around it and some signs warning of the cold. Come on, let's get Nature tidied up.

I agree KH. It's a bit like kicking the smoking habit, much easier than people say.

I should know, I've done it very successfully many times and doubtless will again.
