You can't knock that nice Pam Masters for her efforts, but my cynical antipodean senses detect it's not all just philanthropy and public services.

Before long she'll need somewhere to keep Ian?

If they were successful in getting their two lottery bids, backers might be more interested but with the present economic climate, I don't think that many people will have money to spare. As I said before - if you tick the right boxes you could get the money (might be harder now with the Olympics)

Its interesting that we have 'a project' down my which has also been unsuccessful with the lottery and has now completely restructured their organisation and trying different ways to raise the funds to even start building their project. At a recent meeting it was commented - it's not going to get built for awhile then...........

As to the removal of our own boat from the museum - we have no regrets although she still needs her safety certificate so isn't mobile at the moment.

But has anyone given this lot any money yet - and should they until they, until MoB is able to properly maintain what they have already been given?

Wasn't it nice to see No 5 in the Three Rivers Race - seen here just after start when the wind was quite light.

And now for some totally useless information, I wasted time trying to put together regarding the last known owner of Gladys.

(My other half has taken up an interest in the family tree so I used one of the websites available to those keen on finding their roots.....)

Some of this might be incorrect but as far as I can see this is he....

He is Edward Frederick Medcalf and in 1901 he was 18 and attending boarding school - probably Charterhouse as he was living in Godalming.

His parents are Frederick and Anna(Annie) and he had at least one other sibling Herbert.

In 1908 he married Lilian Blanche Lovell and in the second quarter of 1912 they had a daughter called Nancy (I was hoping to find a daughter or wife called Gladys). They lived in Bromley, Kent at the time

He was a Major and served in the Oxfordshire & Bucks Light Infantry in the 1st World War.

In the 4th quarter of 1934 a Nancy Medcalf married a Charles E G Russell in Surrey NE. I gave up searching for any children as there are considerably more Russells than Medcalfs

According to records.. a Nancy Russell died in East Sussex in August 1991 aged 79 and had been born on the 17th April 1912.

Finding the death of Edward Frederick Medcalf was harder and may not be accurate but a Edward F Medcalf aged 65 died in the Isle of Wight in 1947. This could be him as he would have been that age?

This is all probably totally useless and doesn't help anyone find Gladys unless of course the Russell family continued to sail on the Broads and perhaps a senior family member of anyone reading this message might remember them when they were young?

End of story

Hi W/A, hope that you will excuse me taking the liberty but thought a spot of sunshine might add to your rather splendid, and much appreciated picture!

One final picture - all photos taken looking into the sun

No 5 going over the start line in 1st position but then a quick sprint down Lower Street to get the second photo seen earlier. Hence the comment I knew the wind dropped. Shortly after the wind direction changed and all the other boats were seen on the opposite tack!

And I think the sail's slightly too small! Now all we need is White Damsel out sailing again. OF

My apologies - I don't know how this forum works but I MAY be able to help with info about this family. Was/is "Gladys" the name of a boat that was once owned by EF Medcalf?

If possible, pls contact me "off line"

Hello Dusty
Thanks for your posting to the group.

I am going to suggest to the forum that someone else who can seriously follow this up emails you privately if that's possible?

Yes Gladys is a boat (a Yarmouth One design) and was once owned by the Medcalf family but its whereabouts is now unknown unfortunately. Its fate or where it could now be found would be of great interest to the forum

Oh dear, poor Gladys. I do hope that she will be found.

Unfortunately I can't help with her location but can help with what happened to the family (at least up to abt 1991) and that info may be some help. Obviously we are talking about living family members and I'd rather not discuss them on an open forum.

BTW - would anyone have any photographs of Gladys and her original owners or could they be in any archives anywhere?

I don't know if anyone else saw the article about the Gt Yarmouth OD in the Sep/Oct Anglia Afloat.
They look to be very pretty and an intriguing rig (Lug with a jib).

Out of interest, I tried to search for more details online and came up with a complete blank - other than finding 'Helen' (SN5) in the boats of the Norfolk Broads database ( http://horning.org.uk/boatimage.php?photo=_18654 ). Quite a shock for a Walter Woods design.

My interest now being well and truly aroused, does anyone know any more about this class or where I can go to find out?

Hello Dusty
The thread started back in Nov 07 (see above) but then got into a discussion about the Museum on the Broads where one of the other survivers can now be found. You will see there is a link to one of the surviving Yarmouths. I've also attached a photo I took this year of the same boat in the Three Rivers Race. I don't know if there are any old photos of Gladys?

If you can contact the family on behalf of this forum and ask if any have any recollections of the boat and what might have happened to Gladys - that might be the best way forward.

It's known that the Medcalf family still owned the boat up to the 2nd World War but after the war nothing is known of her (see earlier thread as well). It's a long time ago though so its possible we will never know?

Hope you can help
