I HATE web-based forums! Need I say it again!

Obviously not enough to prevent you using them to sell another forum.

I agree in some respects, I found usenet and Agent (my preferred client) to be much easier to work with.

I do still use usenet occasionally, but it is getting harder and harder to find a decent nntp server, would I trust Yahoo? Not in a million years, they are only just above hotmail on the amoebic dysentry scale of being full blown spammers. I long for the day when web mail is shut down, then we might see less of the spam generated through these totally naff companies, which in turn means they might lose advertising revenue enough to think twice about providing a quality service and then we might see a re-emergence of usenet.

But until usenet does make a comeback I'll chose web based forums over yahoo any day of the week

There! The naivety of youth! :-)

True! The only other guy who I know that tried it repeatedly never finished until he changed boat. Though he insists that one person did succeed once upon a time. I'm beginning to think it may be a fairy tale - but are there any ecords to prove it?

Greg

Only out of frustration. The original version of the message just made allusions to it, which would have been sufficient for anyone with any experience to have found it if they wanted to.

I used that back in my Win3.11fWG days.

Too true! You do have to pay these days for a specific usenet service in much the same way as you do for commercial web hosting.

I trust them to distribute mail list traffic about as much as I trust the typical ISP's news server. I have given up attempting to send any Yahoo mail via SMTP. Their servers all collapsed a couple of months ago and it's clear they are not going to fix them for those not using paid-for accounts.

That was the whole point of mentioning the Gmane URLs. For those who want a web interface it's clean, fast, advert free and comes in two flavours. They even strip out all the garbage that Yahoo adds at the end.

But for real joy you can point your newsreader at their server and get it in news format.

It works for any mail list software, just request that GMane subscribe to your mail list. Their spam protection is as good as it gets. (Nothing's got through on any of the lists that I've browsed!)

'swonderful as Gershwin might have said!

Let's get back to boating!

But a forum is s o o o much easier to work with!

Marc, as an ex IT guy who was one of the first in the UK to use the web long before anyone had heard of it (helping the Yanks test it) I've tried almost everything under the sun since and for this kind of conversation I remain completely happy with the forum format.

Greg, once bitten etc. You are now fully aware of a fault in this site's design so compose long posts in word and paste into the forum when ready.
The only forum where I post regularly keeps a login open until you close your browser session. I do regard such a short timeout as a fault. How long is it here?

Long posts in WORD? Who, would use a word processor rather than their preferred text editor for such a task?

Forums are good. Lists are inefficient ways of conversing and retaining a thread, in fact, it's impossible.
False! Either the correspondents are using bad software or they are using their software badly.

What authority says all discussion about the Broads (or anything) should be email or newsgroup based?
Me - when I'm thoroughly fed up with wasting an hour attempting to learn yet another interface, when if it had been written using one I was used to you'd have got to see my words of wisdom.

You have some very strange ideas when it comes to I.T., the web and communications, Greg.

Have you ever wondered why the rest of the world is out of step with you?
That reminds me of someone who used to use a Mac!

Wisden,

I totally agree that this is a truly horrendous example of crass stupidity, and highly dangerous behaviour.

I am by no means a Brightside apologist, though I do visit and post there on occasion. I don't often go in for comparing sites though, or debating the merits of one forum on another (no offence intended to TH - I have some sympathy for his comments!).

I only hope these brightside comments don't reflect when the Award for the most supportive Forum is announced

Perhaps, just perhaps, Greg will learn his lesson about this forum.

I seriously doubt it.

If everyone knew everything about everything there wouldn't be a debate, now would there? Surely, it's only incomplete knowledge of a subject which creates space for an argument?

I wouldn't know. Anything really. Most I never knew, but what I learned I've forgotten. I think.

But I do have an unwitting yacht.

And I might have suggested that someone entrusted with pointing a publication's readership at selected websites may have taken a different stance. He might have been making himself aware of topical matters and he might have been engaged with the business of guiding his readership to sources of topical information at topically critical times.

But hey! That's just the old-fashioned journo in me. We had paper and ink in my day. Right now I'm more concerned about a White Paper.

This thread fell apart after a wonderful treat to the chuckle muscles, as is customary input from Ol' Fur Balls. Thanks TH, this old fool found it suddenly much easier to piss.

Now you web/newsgroup/list geeks, if I might borrow a little of your native tongue;

STFU. Plz.

Pzmld.

Thinking that I should give old Greg the benefit of the doubt, I took a gander at his site and I am pleased to report that there is no room for doubt. It sucks.

You're making my Wii uncontrollable.

Would you care to be more specific? (To save boring others, I would have asked by private message, but I haven't found out how to do that here.)
